Association between metabolic syndrome and ovarian cancer in elderly women

Abstract: Objective To investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) and ovarian cancer in elderly women and verify whether the level of MS-related indexes can assist in the diagnosis and prevention of ovarian cancer. Methods A total of 121 patients with ovarian neoplasm were selected,including 61 patients with ovarian cancer (malignant group) and 60 patients with ovarian benign tumor (benign group). In addition,117 patients with ovarian cancer were selected and divided into ≤ 60 years group (n=56) and >60 years group (n=61). The level of MS-related indexes (fasting blood glucose,systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure,high-density lipoprotein,low-density lipoprotein,total cholesterol,triglyceride,and D-dimer) and the incidences of abnormal metabolism (overweight or obesity,metabolic disorder,hypertension,and hyperglycemia) and MS were compared between these groups. Results The incidence of MS in the malignant group was high,and it was positively correlated with the incidence of ovarian cancer. Moreover,an increase in the fasting blood glucose and D-dimer levels were significantly correlated with the incidence of ovarian cancer. No significant difference in the MS-related indexes was found between the ≤ 60 years and >60 years groups. Conclusion MS can increase the incidence of ovarian cancer in elderly women. Moreover,increases in the blood glucose and D-dimer levels are independent risk factors for ovarian cancer. D-dimer combined with other tests will be helpful for the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.
